Jeanne Beker Heads to Istanbul Fashion Week with Ryerson University
October 7, 2013
It’s a VERY exciting week!! Today, Canada’s favourite fashion icon, Jeanne Beker will be flying Turkish Airlines to Istanbul with Robert Ott, Chair and Associate Professor of the School of Fashion at Ryerson University, to cover Mercedes-Benz Istanbul Fashion Week with four lucky Ryerson fashion students!
Fashion reporting has changed significantly over the years. Now, social media plays a massive part in this and it was this change has inspired Chair and Associate Professor of the School of Fashion at Ryerson University, Robert Ott, to lead a special topics course “The New Business of Reporting Fashion” featuring Jeanne Beker. The course has drawn inspiration about the discourse of fashion reporting from the popular article The Circus of Fashion by Suzy Menkes and includes a field trip to an international fashion week.
Turkish Airlines Canada will be sponsoring the group’s flight to and from Istanbul as they have selected Mercedes-Benz Istanbul Fashion Week as their point of coverage.
“Jeanne Beker approached me earlier this year about an idea of having students explore what fashion reporting could look like, given the fact that the fashion week industry is at a cross-roads of re-defining the roles of traditional journalism versus digital media. There’s been a lot of speculation (even criticism) from insiders that how things are today will not remain so tomorrow. Jeanne and I loved the idea of throwing all caution in the wind and really experiment and we were really interested in investigating emerging fashion capitals. We think Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Istanbul has a perfect opportunity to carve out a new path. We and the students are so excited to be part of this experience and to document the journey.” – Robert Ott
