Torontonians Will Enjoy Free Turkish Coffee and Opportunity to Delight in Traditional Turkish Culture

March 18^th, Toronto– The Turkish Culture and Tourism Office is bringing a taste of tradition and culture, enlisted by UNESCO in the intangible cultural heritage, to Torontonians with a Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck initiative, a volunteer-led cultural diplomacy project, over the course of a five-day city tour between March 30^th to April 2^nd.

During its Toronto tour, the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck will be stopping in various destinations throughout the city, inviting Toronto to discover the cultural significance and heritage surrounding traditionally prepared Turkish coffee.

Torontonians will have the opportunity to experience fresh roasted Turkish coffee free of charge, as well as engage with the several members of Toronto’s own Turkish community, who will be serving the coffee in customary style.

After successful U.S. and European tours, the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office is thrilled to be bringing the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck to Canada for the first time.

By bringing this important element of our culture straight to Torontonians, we are inviting them to experience a custom that is inherent to the Turkish people and hope to illuminate a factor of the Turkish culture– our delicious, traditionally roasted coffee” says Derya S. Acar of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in Toronto.

Over the course of its five-day tour, the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck will be visiting popular locations such as Dundas Square, University of Toronto, Nathan Philip Square and the CN Tower.

“After receiving incredible attention during our United States and Europe tours, we are excited to partner with the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in Toronto and expand this volunteer initiative to Canada to spread our love for Turkish Coffee and share coffee conversations with Torontonians. Our slogan of this tour is “Turkish Coffee: The Taste of Friendship for 500 years.” said Gizem Salcigil White, the founder and director of the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck project.

In addition to authentic fresh roasted Turkish coffee supplied by Turkey’s oldest coffee grounder, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, guests will be treated to a range of surprises throughout the five-day tour, such as Turkish delight and informative booklets about travel in Turkey.

ABOUT THE MOBILE TURKISH COFFEE TRUCK

The Turkish Coffee Truck was initiated in 2012 as an all-volunteer initiative to promote Turkish coffee culture and to engage people in “coffee conversations.” Between May-September 2012, a group of volunteers traveled to 5 major U.S. cities (Washington D.C. Baltimore, New York, New Haven, and Boston) to offer free Turkish coffee to the American people. The tour also visited world-class universities including Harvard, Yale and George Washington University to directly engage future world leaders. Ten thousand Americans enjoyed Turkish coffee. The project received domestic and international media coverage as well as official recognition from the Turkish Consulates in Washington D.C. and New York and from the U.S. House of Representatives. Since then, the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck has also been in European countries including Istanbul, Netherlands, Belgium and France and now marks on its list of visited countries. The project is generously supported by donations from Turkey’s oldest coffee ground seller, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi.
